Karoo Select – What inspired us?

When I first started developing Karoo Select, I didn’t fully realize how much this venture would shape the way I think about design, culture, and entrepreneurship. What began as a simple idea—connecting luxury interior designers in the U.S. with ethically sourced African décor—quickly became a meaningful exploration of heritage, craftsmanship, and purpose. Blog 2 is my chance to reflect on where this idea came from, what I’ve learned, and where this brand is headed next.

How the Idea First of Karoo Select Emerged

The inspiration behind Karoo Select is deeply rooted in my personal background. Growing up around the wildlife and culture of South Africa, I always saw how much pride artisans and taxidermists took in their work. Many of them worked sustainably, followed strict wildlife regulations, and honored the natural materials they handled. Yet when I entered the U.S. interior design world, I noticed something surprising: designers loved exotic décor, but rarely had access to pieces with clear provenance or ethical documentation.

This gap stood out immediately. Beautiful pieces existed. Skilled artisans existed. But transparent, ethical access did not.
Karoo Select was born to bridge that divide—bringing authentic, ethically sourced horns and décor pieces into the luxury market through honesty, craftsmanship, and cultural respect.

Connecting With Customers and Learning Their Needs

Talking directly with potential customers has been one of the most valuable parts of the process. Interior designers told me again and again that they were frustrated with:

High markups
Unreliable suppliers
Long lead times
Questionable sourcing or legality

One designer in Nashville shared something that stuck with me:
“I love using horns in high-end spaces, but most suppliers can’t tell me where the piece came from or whether it’s legal. My clients ask those questions. I need those answers.”

Hearing that validated everything. Designers want beauty, but they also want credibility. Collectors want statement pieces, but they also want story and provenance. Retailers want inventory that stands out, not generic décor.

That insight confirmed that Karoo Select wasn’t just a décor brand—it was a sourcing and storytelling solution.

One Major Challenge & How I Pivoted

My biggest challenge so far came early: managing international logistics. Importing natural materials means dealing with CITES permits, wildlife inspection requirements, packaging standards, and customs delays. Initially, I thought strong sourcing relationships would be the hardest part. But the reality? Navigating the system and ensuring seamless import operations was the true test.

Rather than abandoning the idea or downplaying the complexity, I pivoted by building compliance into the brand itself. I decided that Karoo Select would not simply “deal with regulations” — we would champion them. Today, ethical sourcing, transparency, and legal compliance are core value propositions—not obstacles. This shift changed everything. It turned a challenge into a competitive advantage.

Values That Guide the Venture

Karoo Select stands on four values:

Authenticity — Every piece has a verifiable origin and cultural story.
Ethical Sourcing — Sustainability and legality are non-negotiable.
Craftsmanship — We highlight the art, not just the product.
Transparency — Designers and collectors deserve clarity, not guesswork.

These values shape our brand voice, our partnerships, our customer relationships, and our long-term goals.
